Rockstar Games has finally answered the question every Grand Theft Auto fan has been asking: when can you start downloading GTA 6? The answer is Tuesday, November 10 — nine days before the game unlocks — and you will need a lot of free space to do it.

The studio confirmed the pre-load schedule in a press advisory on November 3, setting out different start times for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, a later date for physical editions, and a download size that will force many players to clear out their drives first.

When you can pre-load on each console

On PlayStation 5, digital pre-orders can begin downloading at midnight local time on Tuesday, November 10 — so the download opens at midnight wherever you are. On Xbox Series X|S, pre-loading begins at a single global time: 12 a.m. GMT on November 10, which is 7 p.m. Eastern and 4 p.m. Pacific on Monday, November 9 in the United States.

Players who bought a physical copy will wait a little longer. Code-in-box editions are expected to reach retailers from Thursday, November 12, and the box contains a download code rather than a disc — so the same download is required either way. The change moves digital pre-loading up by two days from the November 12 date many order pages had previously shown.

Why 212 GB matters

Rockstar says the pre-load file will require up to 212 GB of available space, depending on your device, and PlayStation's own support page tells PS5 owners to clear a minimum of 212 GB before the download begins. The figure is a preload-space requirement, not a confirmed final installed size — a day-one patch, if one arrives, could add to it, and the final footprint may differ once the game is installed.

Even so, 212 GB is a serious chunk of a console's drive. On the original 825 GB PlayStation 5, which offers about 667 GB of usable space, GTA 6 alone would take roughly a third of the drive; on Xbox Series S, with about 364 GB free, it would take well over half. Players planning to pre-load should start clearing space now rather than on the night of November 9.

The November 19 launch

Pre-loading only downloads the game in advance — nobody can play early. Grand Theft Auto VI launches on Thursday, November 19, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, unlocking at local midnight in each region. Rockstar has still not announced a PC version or a PC pre-load window, so console players get the first run of the most anticipated game launch in years.

With the pre-load dates now set, the countdown is concrete: download from November 10, clear 212 GB, and be ready for midnight on November 19.
