Mercedes-AMG has pulled the covers off the 2028 AMG GT SUV, the first full-size SUV its performance division has developed entirely in-house from the ground up. The all-electric flagship makes 1,153 horsepower in top trim, charges at up to 710 kilowatts, and is headed to US dealerships in the summer of 2027. It is only the second vehicle built on the company's dedicated AMG.EA high-performance electric architecture, after the electric GT 4-Door Coupé revealed earlier this year.
A tri-motor monster with motors from inside the wheelhouse
The range launches with three versions. The flagship AMG GT 63 SUV runs three axial-flux electric motors — two on the rear axle and a booster unit on the front that disconnects under light loads to save energy — producing 1,153 hp peak and 1,475 lb-ft of torque, with 711 hp of sustained output. Mercedes-AMG quotes a 0-to-60 mph sprint of 2.4 seconds and a 168 mph electronically limited top speed. The GT 55 SUV uses the same three-motor layout for 805 hp, while the entry GT 53 SUV uses two conventional synchronous motors for 536 hp. The axial-flux hardware comes from YASA, the British motor specialist Mercedes bought in 2021, and packs far more power per kilogram than the radial-flux motors found in most EVs.
Charging that outruns the public network
The 800-volt GT 63 and GT 55 carry a 128 kWh battery supporting up to 710 kW charging, with 10 to 80 percent taking roughly 12 minutes and up to 450 km of WLTP range added in 10 minutes under ideal conditions. The GT 53's smaller 106 kWh pack charges at up to 600 kW. The oil-cooled cylindrical cell pack uses NCMA cathodes and silicon-containing anodes, managed by an AI-driven Predictive Performance Manager that uses track-mapping data to adjust motor output before heat becomes a problem. In practice, the charging speeds exceed what most US public chargers can deliver — they are mostly rated around 400 kW — so owners will rarely see the car's full capability.
Sound, software and the China question
To win over traditional combustion buyers, the standard AMGFORCE Sport+ program pipes in recorded AMG V8 and six-cylinder engine audio, simulates paddle-shifted gear changes with seat vibrations, and offers a Silent mode to switch it all off. A 14-inch MB.OS display integrates AI agents from ChatGPT, Microsoft and Google, while AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+ suspension, rear-wheel steering and a 2,700 kg curb weight keep the big SUV agile. The launch lands as premium European brands face real pressure from Chinese rivals like BYD and Geely, who have been pushing electric power, charging speed and software at a blistering pace. US pricing and EPA range figures have not been announced yet, but with the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric and Lucid Gravity in its sights, the GT SUV is aimed squarely at the top of the luxury performance market.
