Google's AI assistant is moving from your pocket into your commute. The company announced on Tuesday that Personal Intelligence — the Gemini feature that pulls context from your Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Maps, YouTube and Search history — is rolling out to Android Auto starting immediately, with cars running Google Built-in to follow in the coming months.

The idea is simple: instead of an assistant that only answers general questions, Gemini in the car can now answer questions about you. Ask "what's my flight gate, and is it on time?" while driving to the airport, and Gemini will dig the confirmation email out of your inbox and answer both at once — no fumbling with your phone at 70 miles an hour.

Your inbox, now behind the wheel

Google's examples read like a wishlist for anyone who has ever yelled at their dashboard. Say "take me to my doctor's appointment" and it pulls the address straight from a confirmation email. Ask it to "find the car wash from the photo I took last week" and Gemini scrolls through your camera roll, identifies the business and starts navigation. It can point you to a coffee shop you mentioned in a conversation yesterday, or find an indoor restaurant on your route that matches your usual dining taste.

The feature also handles more complex, multi-step requests. Personal Intelligence combines retrieval — pulling a specific detail from an email, a photo or a saved Maps place — with reasoning across those sources, so you can speak naturally instead of reciting exact commands. As Gemini senior product manager Karan Daryanani put it: "Personal Intelligence has two core strengths: retrieving specific details from, say, an email, photo or a place you saved in Google Maps to answer your question and reasoning across complex sources."

That, he said, is "especially helpful when your hands are on the wheel. Personal Intelligence does the heavy lifting so you can speak naturally, without having to explain context or dig for information."

Opt-in, with some fine print

There is a privacy-sized asterisk on all of this. The feature is entirely opt-in — Google says your other apps stay disconnected until you switch it on. If you already enabled Personal Intelligence in the Gemini phone app, the preference follows you into the car automatically. And on cars with Google Built-in, personalized answers only appear while you're in the car with your phone connected.

Eligibility is narrow for now: personal Google accounts only, users aged 18 and older. Workspace, business, education and other restricted accounts are left out — and so are drivers in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria, at least for now. The United States and India are among the covered markets.

The car is becoming another Google screen

The rollout caps a year-long push to put Gemini in the driver's seat. Gemini first arrived in cars last November; in April it replaced the traditional Google Assistant experience in Android Auto. Personal Intelligence itself rolled out across the US in March and is now in beta in global markets — today's move stitches it into the drive.

The competitive stakes are familiar. Apple is reportedly preparing a Gemini-powered Siri overhaul for iOS 26.4, and every major tech company now treats the car as the next screen worth owning. Google's bet is that the one who knows your inbox best wins the dashboard. Drivers who keep Personal Intelligence switched off still get navigation, music, calls and general answers — they just won't be personalized.
