China's race to build the definitive AI assistant just got a massive cash injection. Personal agent startup Today AI announced on Tuesday that it has completed a financing round exceeding $200 million, drawing backing from an all-star lineup of Chinese tech giants and venture funds, including Ant Group, Tencent, Sequoia China, IDG Capital, 5Y Capital, and Transsion Holdings.
The news broke via the official WeChat account of Ant Group's strategic investment arm, and was reported by PANews and ChainCatcher on October 21. Also participating in the round were Tongge Venture Capital and Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Hanyuan Asset arm.
Today AI's pitch is simple but ambitious: a personalized, proactive AI system that gives every user their own intelligent assistant — one that doesn't wait to be asked. The product spans schedule management, lifestyle services, work assistance, travel planning, note-taking, research, health management, news delivery, and study coaching.
China's "personal agent" gold rush
The timing is no accident. 2026 has become the year of the agent in China, with giants like Ant Group, Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance all pushing AI assistants that can act on a user's behalf rather than merely answer questions. Today AI is positioning itself as an independent contender in that crowded field — and its investor roster reads like a who's who of the companies it hopes to compete with.
Tencent's presence on the cap table is particularly notable. The Shenzhen giant is building its own office agent product, WorkBuddy, while Ant Group has been weaving AI assistants through its payments and healthcare ecosystem. Their willingness to back an independent personal-agent startup suggests the market is large enough to support multiple winners — or that nobody wants to miss the boat if Today AI becomes the default assistant on Chinese phones.
From closed beta to public launch
According to the announcement, Today AI's product has already completed its closed-beta phase and made its first public launch in China. The company did not disclose its current user numbers, revenue, or valuation — but the caliber of the round's backers implies serious traction for a company at this stage.
Transsion Holdings' participation is an interesting tell. The phone maker dominates the African smartphone market and has deep reach across emerging markets, which could give a personal-agent product a distribution channel far beyond China's borders if the partnership evolves that way.
What comes next
The new capital puts Today AI among the best-funded agent startups in China, but the competitive pressure is intense. Moonshot AI is expanding internationally, ByteDance's agents ship with massive distribution, and the big model labs are all building assistant layers on top of their own models.
Today AI's bet is that a personalized, proactive agent — one that learns your schedule, habits, and preferences and acts before you ask — will be differentiated enough to win users on its own merits. With $200 million in the bank and China's most influential tech investors in its corner, it now has the runway to prove it.
