The change, which started rolling out globally on October 7, 2026 for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, marks the biggest shift in how ChatGPT presents answers since the service launched. Free and Go-tier users begin receiving the update on October 8, using the lighter GPT-6 Luna model, while paid tiers run on GPT-6 Sol.
Answers that adapt to the question
With Intelligent UI, the format of a response depends on what is being asked. A product comparison can appear side by side, a complex explanation can turn into an interactive chart, and a road-trip question can show up as a map with notes on which stops are worth the detour. Users can also ask for small tools on demand — OpenAI's examples include a retirement savings calculator, a dinner bill splitter, and a playable game.
One demonstration shows the difference. Asked to plan a Sunday roast, the older model answered with a menu, a table of quantities, and a written schedule. The new GPT-6 answered with photos of each dish, a guest counter that recalculates the shopping list, a copy button for that list, a cooking checklist timed for dinner, and hosting tips — a miniature app instead of a paragraph.
Built to stream, built to think out loud
Behind the scenes, OpenAI says it built a library of native, streamable interface components plus a compiler that renders the interface while the model is still writing, so the screen assembles piece by piece instead of appearing only when the full answer finishes. GPT-6 can also begin answering while it is still reasoning: OpenAI says the new model starts responding to questions that need web search 44 percent sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant, and scored higher on difficult web searches in internal tests.
The company evaluated the interfaces GPT-6 generates for clarity, usefulness, and completeness during training, and says the model's design judgment still needs more work. Simple questions, it adds, will still get simple text answers when an interface would add little.
A race to replace the app menu
The move puts OpenAI directly against Google, which shipped a similar idea — "Neural Expressive" — to its Gemini chatbot in May. Both companies are betting that the chatbot window can absorb whole categories of software: why open a calculator, a travel site, or a chart tool when the assistant can generate one on the spot?
The audience is enormous. OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week, giving even a subtle interface change a reach no standalone productivity app can match. For now, the update applies only to ChatGPT's Chat experience — the models powering Work and Codex remain unchanged.
