Storyline:
OpenAI has temporarily stopped accepting new sign-ups and upgrades for its highest-usage $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan after demand for GPT-6 Astra surged beyond expectations.

The company confirmed that the pause took effect on September 10, 2026, and applies specifically to the Pro 20X tier. Existing subscribers on the $200 plan are not affected, while the lower-cost $100 Pro plan remains available.

OpenAI product leader Thibault Sottiaux said Astra demand has been “unprecedented” and that the company is taking the smallest possible step to protect performance and availability for existing users.

The $200 Pro plan puts significantly more strain on OpenAI’s infrastructure because it offers much higher usage limits than lower-tier subscriptions. Pausing new sign-ups allows the company to reduce additional load while it works to expand computing capacity.

GPT-6 Astra launched earlier in September and has attracted strong interest because of major improvements in reasoning, coding, research, computer use and professional workflows.

The surge highlights one of the biggest challenges facing leading AI companies: demand for increasingly powerful models is growing faster than the computing infrastructure needed to serve them.

OpenAI has not announced when new subscriptions to the $200 Pro tier will reopen, saying the pause will remain in place while additional capacity is added.
