OnePlus has taken the wraps off the camera system of its next flagship, the OnePlus 16, confirming what will be the biggest imaging upgrade in the company's history. The phone will feature a 200-megapixel primary camera, two 50-megapixel supporting sensors, and a new imaging platform called LUMO that promises a major leap in mobile photography.
The announcement comes as the OnePlus 16 is already open for pre-reservation in China, where it is expected to launch first before heading to global markets. With camera samples shared by the company itself, OnePlus is clearly betting on photography as the defining feature of its new flagship.
A 200MP primary camera leads the charge
The headline act is a 200-megapixel HPE main camera built around a large 1/1.4-inch sensor with an f/1.6 aperture and optical image stabilisation. This is the first time OnePlus has used a 200-megapixel sensor as the primary camera on a flagship phone, putting it in direct competition with Samsung's Galaxy S Ultra line and other resolution-focused flagships.
The wide f/1.6 aperture is designed to pull in more light, which should help the phone in low-light and night photography, while OIS will keep shots steady during long exposures and video recording. Combined with pixel-binning technology, the sensor will be able to produce detailed 12.5-megapixel images in everyday shooting while retaining the full 200-megapixel mode for extreme detail and cropping flexibility.
Upgrades across the telephoto, ultra-wide and selfie cameras
The supporting cameras have not been neglected. The OnePlus 16 packs a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera using an upgraded Sony IMX882 sensor with 3x optical zoom and up to 6x lossless digital zoom, all with optical image stabilisation. This marks a significant step up from the 2x or 3x telephoto units seen on previous OnePlus flagships and should deliver sharper zoomed shots and better portrait photography.
The 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera offers a wide 116-degree field of view for landscapes and group shots, while the front camera has been upgraded to a 50-megapixel sensor with autofocus support for sharper selfies and higher-fidelity video calls. The company has already shared official camera samples to show off the new hardware.
LUMO imaging engine and pro-grade video
Hardware is only half the story. The OnePlus 16 introduces the LUMO imaging system, the brand's new light-condensing imaging platform developed alongside Oppo's LUMO imaging engine. It brings a LUMO Color Palette for distinctive colour science, Open Gate support, and new shooting modes including Master Mode for film-like light and shadow rendering, a High-Resolution Mode for extreme clarity, and a 65:24 Wide-Field Mode for a cinematic aspect ratio.
On the video side, the phone supports up to 4K recording at 120 frames per second, with Dolby Vision and LOG video recording included. LOG capture is a feature usually reserved for professional cameras, giving creators far more flexibility in colour grading their footage after shooting.
Flagship platform, 165Hz display and bold colours
Beyond the cameras, the OnePlus 16 is confirmed as one of the first commercial phones powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset, built on a 2nm process with a peak clock speed of 5.0GHz. The phone also supports a system-wide 165Hz refresh rate and adopts a flat display with four-sided symmetrical bezels and rounded corners for a more comfortable hand feel.
OnePlus has also confirmed three colour options: Tomorrow's Starlight, Dark Forest, and Martian Masterpiece, an eye-catching orange shade. The pre-order listing in China confirms four memory variants: 12GB/256GB, 12GB/512GB, 16GB/512GB and 16GB/1TB. OnePlus has additionally teased an "Interstellar Light Effect", a dynamic illumination interface that reacts to calls, notifications, media playback, charging and gaming.
A rumour circulating from tipsters suggests the phone could pack a massive 9,000mAh battery, but this has not been confirmed by OnePlus and should be treated as speculation for now.
Launch timeline and Pakistan outlook
The OnePlus 16 is currently available for pre-reservation in China, with the official launch expected in the coming weeks. A global launch, including India, typically follows within a couple of months, though OnePlus has not announced dates yet.
For Pakistan, OnePlus does not operate officially, so the phone would most likely arrive through unofficial and parallel importers a few months after the global launch, as has been the pattern with recent OnePlus flagships. Pricing is unconfirmed, but based on the flagship positioning, expect it to land firmly in the premium segment, likely above Rs 280,000 for the base variant. This is only an estimate and actual street prices will depend on import costs and taxes at the time of arrival.
