The man who co-founded Nutanix and ThoughtSpot is back with a third company. Ajeet Singh has emerged from stealth with Different, an AI-powered marketing technology startup, announcing a $48 million seed round led by General Catalyst.
The round, announced October 21, also drew in Lightspeed Venture Partners, Together Fund, Haystack Ventures, MXV Capital and Firebolt Ventures. The company says the funding will be used to expand its engineering and go-to-market teams as it scales adoption of its platform.
Different's pitch is simple: an AI marketing system that runs demand generation end-to-end for lean B2B marketing teams. Marketers set the strategy and creative direction; the system plans campaigns, creates ads, emails and landing pages, tailors messages to each target account, and shifts spend toward whatever is working — while campaigns are still running.
A marketing team of five doing the work of 50
"We Built Different so a marketing team of five can do the work of 50," Singh said. "Marketers own the strategy and the creative ideas. Different turns them into campaigns and keeps learning and optimizing as they run, so companies can grow faster without wasting spend."
The platform works from what the company calls a shared memory of each customer's strategy, brand and past results, so lessons learned in one channel carry over to others. Every piece of work still goes to a human marketer for review before it goes live — the system proposes, humans approve.
Different also tracks how a brand shows up in AI-generated answers and recommends content to improve visibility — a growing concern as more buyers ask chatbots for recommendations.
The company says early customers are already seeing results. Developer-tools startup Descope used the platform to identify and redirect 60 percent of paid ad spend that was being lost to poor targeting, while software firm Motif, with a three-person marketing team, scaled from one campaign at a time to more than a dozen running across four channels.
A serial unicorn builder
Singh's track record gives the announcement extra weight. He co-founded hybrid-cloud company Nutanix in 2009, which listed on Nasdaq in 2016, and left in 2012 to start AI-powered analytics platform ThoughtSpot, which has raised more than $670 million and was last valued at nearly $4.5 billion.
His co-founders bring their own enterprise firepower. Chief product officer Abhishek Pani previously led the machine-learning team behind Adobe's marketing products, while chief technology officer Abhinav Yajurvedi built large-scale marketing infrastructure at Flipkart and Myntra. The startup has teams in San Francisco and Bengaluru.
Why the timing works
The launch lands in a martech market being rewritten by AI. Individual marketing tasks — writing copy, generating images, drafting emails — have become cheap and fast, but running a full campaign still forces teams to manually coordinate dozens of tools and channels. Different's bet is that the next big win belongs to systems that close the loop from planning to optimization without proportional headcount.
With the product available now and a $48 million war chest, Different will test whether small marketing teams are ready to hand the keys to an AI system — and whether "a team of five doing the work of 50" is a slogan or a new standard.
