Microsoft has moved into the next phase of its Windows 11 2026 Update rollout, quietly adding new ways to download and install version 26H2 as the company races to get eligible PCs upgraded.
The update, which reached general availability on September 29, is being distributed in phases — and this week the company widened the funnel with additional download options, including a separate Installation Assistant and direct image links for anyone the automatic rollout has not reached yet.
A smaller, faster upgrade
Unlike the major upgrades of years past, 26H2 is delivered as an enablement package — a small update that switches on features already present in the version 24H2 and 25H2 codebase.
For PCs already running one of those versions, upgrading typically means one quick download and a single restart rather than a full reinstall.
Microsoft is also offering standalone ISOs and the Media Creation Tool for clean installs or repairs, and safeguard holds remain in place to pause the rollout on devices where compatibility problems are spotted.
There is one caveat for businesses: reports this week noted that some managed devices pinned to 25H2 through Autopatch or Intune received 26H2 anyway, so administrators are being urged to double-check their update rings and feature-update policies.
Microsoft tracks the phased rollout through its Release Health dashboard.
Deadlines are approaching
The timing matters because support windows are shifting.
Windows 11 version 24H2 stops receiving updates on October 13, 2026, when 26H2 also gets its first scheduled monthly security update.
PCs still on 24H2 need to move to 25H2 or 26H2 to stay covered.
Installing 26H2 resets the support clock: Home and Pro editions get 24 months of support from the install date, while Enterprise and Education editions get 36.
Users on 25H2, which remains supported until October 2027, have less urgency — the advice from the broader tech community is to take 26H2 when Windows Update offers it rather than chasing the update manually.
What to watch before you install
Microsoft lists a handful of known issues under investigation: some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices can stop producing sound or throw a Code 10 error.
Domain-joined machines can lose their secure trust relationship with the domain in certain configurations involving Machine Identity Isolation, and Azure Virtual Desktop hosts running FSLogix have reported black screens after sign-in.
Workarounds exist for each, but anyone running affected hardware or setups may prefer to wait for the phased rollout to reach them naturally.
Notably, some features in the update require newer hardware such as Copilot+ PCs, and most of 26H2's underlying content was actually delivered to PCs over the past year — the update mostly flips the switch and resets the support clock.
To grab it now, open Settings, head to Windows Update, turn on "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available," and check for updates.
