Anthropic on Monday announced that its Claude AI models are now live with in-country inference in India through Amazon Bedrock, meaning prompts sent to Claude through the India endpoint and the model's responses are now processed on servers located within the country.
The models available with in-country inference include Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5. The move is aimed at giving financial institutions, government bodies and large enterprises the data-residency assurances they need to deploy Claude at scale across their most sensitive workloads.

Why in-country processing matters

Indian organizations in regulated sectors have long asked for local inference, a requirement that is often an imperative where strict regulatory and data-handling standards apply. The capability arrives as Indian firms work to comply with local data processing norms under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act.
According to the company, deployments through Amazon Bedrock in India provide the audit trails and access controls that risk and compliance teams require before deploying AI in production environments.

A commitment months in the making

"In August, we committed to bringing Claude inference to India, and we are delivering on that promise," said Irina Ghose, managing director of Anthropic India. She described the step as a long-term commitment, adding that the company will keep growing its team in India and investing in local partnerships.
Sandeep Dutta, president of AWS India and South Asia, said data residency is the parameter that decides whether AI stays confined to pilots or reaches full production, and that in-country inference lets banks, insurers and public institutions deploy AI at production scale.

India is a priority market

India is Anthropic's second-largest market for Claude.ai, and home to one of the most technically sophisticated developer communities the company serves. Software development accounts for 45.2 percent of the work-related tasks Indian users bring to Claude, the highest share of any market, according to Ghose.
Adoption has spread beyond coding over the past year, with reported use across banking and payments, large enterprises, IT services, healthcare, science and public services.
Reliance and CRED are among the customers that have already tested the service in private preview. Anthropic opened its Bengaluru office in February and has been deepening its presence in the country since.
Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Web Services' platform for accessing and deploying generative AI models, provides the infrastructure through which customers can access Claude locally.

With the India endpoint now live, organizations that had kept AI deployments on hold while waiting for an in-country inference option can move them ahead into production.
